This morning at around 10:20 am a girl came to my office and said she had lost her bus pass. I was kind of confused, but she was wearing a backpack and looked college-age, so I wasn’t sure if she was a new library hire and knew Circ had a lost and found. She was telling me how she had to sleep at a Starbucks last night and she had $72 on her bus pass and she’s a freshman who lives off campus. So, I checked the lost and found, but there was no bus pass. I gave her the Lost and Found phone numbers list and said she could call our desk to see if it’s turned in later or any of the other numbers. She said ok and then walked back down the hallway. I followed and she was standing in ILL. I asked if she works in the library and she said no but Public Safety had told her to come here. I said ok they probably said come to the Circ desk, but this is a staff only area. I directed her out the swinging door and she said I could trust her because she’s a singer/model/actress and Michael Jackson’s niece. She was trying to show me her Facebook page on her phone and said 2 professors follow her page and she is performing on campus in 2 weeks. I said ok good luck with your bus pass and backed away. She was repeating her name is Wendy Prescott Jackson and she’s 15 years old and Latoya’s daughter and was holding up a picture of Latoya Jackson. I went back to my office to call Bill and she walked over to Lexi and said I didn’t help her and she was looking for her bus pass. Lexi checked and it wasn’t there so she walked out of the dome. Description: Female, 5’3″, thin build around 100 lbs, black shoulder-length straight hair, pink knitted beanie, brown eyes, African American. Pink backpack, jeans, a gold cross necklace. I checked Alma and there’s no patron by that name. I also closed the door from the Donor Hall to Stack Maintenance. -Claire

Lost and Found procedure
If a patron asks if we have their item in our lost and found, the answer is ALWAYS “I will check/let me look/one moment, please”. Many items look alike and we don’t want to give patrons false hope.
If the item is a valuable, remember to have the patron sign it out in the log and write down their Red ID # (or drivers license #) where it says ID.
For items not in the cabinet, we have a Lost and Found phone number handout that you can give to the patron.

BACK TO BACK LAPTOP CHECKOUTS
Please stop letting patrons checkout laptops back to back. It is required that they wait ONE DAY in between so that other students have the opportunity to check out the same item.
Refer to this page on the Lib website and show the Renewal Policy to patrons who may give you a hard time.

Media equipment page – update
Hi everyone, a few updates have been made to the media equipment page:
https://library.sdsu.edu/media/borrow-media-equipment
1) Some items (cameras, audio gear, and projector) now have info links directly underneath the links where you can check their availability. Feel free to use these links for when patrons want a little more information on what brands and models we have.
2) Toward the bottom, a new section has been added for Overdue Fine Amounts. Depending on the loan periods, different items (Media materials, media reserves, and media equipment) have different fine amounts. Please refer to this when patrons ask about potential fines for items turned in late.
Barcodes deleted
Currently, patron barcodes are not working. This is temporarily down, so don’t slide the patron’s red ID card until further notice.
Double Checking Course Reserves
Until further notice:
Please double check in Course Reserve items before reshelving them.
There have been too many incidents recently of items not being checked in before being put on the shelf.
Thanks!
For lost/stolen phones
I found this sticky note on the front desk:
To the patron who inquired about further action regarding his stolen cell phone around 9pm on 1/30/18.
For lost/stolen phone:
go to SDSU PD headquarters near Peterson Gym and see if you’re able to make a police report. You will need info such as when it happened, description of suspect, value of stolen property, etc.
You can also check with Diana Rose. She works at SDSU PD station as well.

Gate Alarm procedures
Official policy is being compiled but, until it’s complete, please follow these prodedures:
- If the gates alarm, please say in a firm voice, loud enough to be heard, ‘Step back, please’ or ‘Please come to the Desk’.
- If they step back through the gates and they don’t set off the alarm, you can tell them to try again- hopefully the gate will not alarm again. If it does, have the person come all the way to the desk
Please remember that there are a number of reasons the gates will alarm:
*Books from another Library
*Rental books
*Books purchased from a used book site (like Amazon)
*Items incorrectly checked out on the Self-Check machines
Don’t assume that the person is trying to steal our material; ask if they have books that meet any of the criteria above, or if they have SDSU material that they have forgotten to check out.
Gates will NOT alarm because of electronic devices, so there is no need to ask if a patron has a laptop.
Remain polite and non-confrontational. If nothing is found, have them go through the gates again.
If the gate continues to alarm, please get a staff person for assistance.
