Gate Alarm procedures

Official policy is being compiled but, until it’s complete, please follow these prodedures:

  • If the gates alarm, please say in a firm voice, loud enough to be heard, ‘Step back, please’ or ‘Please come to the Desk’.
  • If they step back through the gates and they don’t set off the alarm, you can tell them to try again- hopefully the gate will not alarm again. If it does, have the person come all the way to the desk

Please remember that there are a number of reasons the gates will alarm:
*Books from another Library
*Rental books
*Books purchased from a used book site (like Amazon)
*Items incorrectly checked out on the Self-Check machines

Don’t assume that the person is trying to steal our material; ask if they have books that meet any of the criteria above, or if they have SDSU material that they have forgotten to check out.

Gates will NOT alarm because of electronic devices, so there is no need to ask if a patron has a laptop.

Remain polite and non-confrontational. If nothing is found, have them go through the gates again.
If the gate continues to alarm, please get a staff person for assistance.
